Kiyosumi Gardens: A Peaceful Escape in Tokyo (Plus 1 Café with a stunning view)
Tokyo is often described as a city of bright lights, busy crossings and endless crowds. But every now and then, you discover a place that feels completely different. During my visit to Kiyosumi Gardens, I found exactly that—a peaceful landscape where the sounds of the city fade into birdsong and the gentle movement of water.
Actually the main reason for being in this area was trying the nearby Byron Bay Café, as my plan is to visit all of their locations. As luck would have it, on the second flor of the Café, you have a window with an awesome view towards the park. I couldn’t resist the temptation and after a delicious cup of cappuccino, I went to the entrance of the Kiyosumi Gardens. The entry fee is quite symbolic 150 yen and the staff are kind and extremely polite.
From the moment I entered the Kiyosumi Gardens, I was struck by how carefully everything had been designed. Beautiful ponds reflected the surrounding trees, stepping stones invited visitors to explore different paths, and colorful flowers added touches of seasonal beauty throughout the park.
Japan and nature intertwine at Kiyosumi Gardens
One of my favorite moments was seeing a young couple dressed in traditional kimonos. They were quietly walking along the stone paths, stopping every so often to take photographs beside the water. It felt like a scene from another era and blended perfectly with the timeless atmosphere of the garden.
Nature is everywhere in Kiyosumi Gardens. I spotted several turtles relaxing on rocks, birds flying freely between the trees, and colorful flowers blooming around the walking paths. It’s the kind of place where you naturally slow down, take a deep breath, and simply enjoy your surroundings.
Although the garden is located in one of the world’s busiest cities, it creates a remarkable sense of calm. Whether you’re interested in photography, Japanese gardens or simply escaping the crowds for an hour, Kiyosumi Gardens is well worth a visit.
Bonus Stop: Byron Bay Café
As I mentioned above, my main reason for visiting Kiyosumi Gardens was Byron Bay Café, a place I would happily recommend after your visit. The café overlooks the gardens, offering a beautiful view while you enjoy a coffee or a light meal.
After spending time surrounded by nature, sitting by the window with a cup of coffee while looking back over the greenery felt like the perfect way to end the afternoon. The relaxed atmosphere made it difficult to leave. The interior is of course very Australian influenced – you have surfboards, rugs with motives of Australia and to be honest the building is similar to a Bondi Beach store.
My Thoughts
Kiyosumi Gardens reminded me that Tokyo isn’t only about skyscrapers and famous landmarks. Some of its greatest treasures are the quiet places that allow you to experience a different side of the city.
If you’re planning a visit, take your time. Walk slowly, watch the wildlife, admire the flowers, and if you can, finish your visit with a coffee overlooking the garden. Sometimes the simplest experiences become the most memorable ones.

Immediate second visit to Kiyosumi Gardens
Actually I was so impressed with the gardens, that immediately the next day we visited again with my wife. It was nice to share this lovely place with a love one. This day the sun was not scorching hot and we could enjoy more the nature. We had a beautiful follower around the gardens – a goldish carp who was friendly and we enjoyed sharing the day as whenever we were close to the pond, he would show up and say hello.
A Small Souvenir
