Ginza Six Rooftop Garden: One of Tokyo’s Hidden Oasis Above the City and 4000 square meters of supreme chill
When most people think of Ginza, luxury shopping, designer boutiques and busy streets immediately come to mind. During one of my recent walks through the district, however, I discovered a completely different side of Ginza—one that was peaceful, green and surprisingly quiet.
Located on the roof of Ginza Six, the Ginza Six Rooftop Garden is one of those places that feels like a hidden oasis in the middle of one of Tokyo’s busiest neighborhoods. Measuring approximately 4,000 square meters, GINZA SIX Garden is the largest rooftop garden open to the public in the Ginza area.
A Book Lover’s Stop: GINZA TSUTAYA BOOKS
Before making my way to the Ginza Six rooftop garden, I wandered through GINZA TSUTAYA BOOKS, one of the most impressive bookstores I’ve visited in Tokyo.
The space is beautifully designed, with carefully curated collections covering art, photography, architecture, design, fashion and Japanese culture. Rather than feeling like a typical bookstore, it invites you to slow down, browse the shelves and discover something unexpected.
We found ourselves lost in the stylish decorations. You should know that there is usually an exhibition inside where you can enjoy pieces of art from a renowned artist on display. Piece of art are also on sale in the book store along with classy souvenirs which you can bring home to your loved ones.
After leaving the bookstore, heading up to the Ginza Six Rooftop Garden felt like the perfect next step. Together, they offer a side of Ginza that goes beyond luxury shopping—a place where you can appreciate books, architecture, nature and some of the best views in the city.
Together, the bookstore and the rooftop garden offer a different side of Ginza—one that isn’t focused on shopping, but on taking your time and appreciating your surroundings.
A Garden Above the City
After taking the elevator to the Ginza Six Rooftop Garden, the atmosphere changed almost instantly. The noise of the streets below faded away, replaced by greenery, wooden walkways and comfortable seating areas where people could simply relax and enjoy the view. You will not be the only one as you can see people chilling left and right and just escaping the summer heat under the lush greenery.
It’s remarkable how a few floors can make such a difference. Instead of traffic and shopping crowds, you’re surrounded by carefully designed gardens with open views across Tokyo.
A Different Perspective of Ginza
One of my favourite parts of visiting the Ginza Six Rooftop Garden was seeing Ginza from above. Modern office buildings, elegant department stores and the city’s skyline stretch into the distance, reminding you just how vast Tokyo really is.
Although many visitors come to Ginza for shopping, the rooftop offers a chance to slow down before continuing your day. You can see easily the ubiquitous Sky Tree. There is of course the Uniqlo high building just across the entrance to Ginza Six.
A Place to Pause
What I appreciated most was the atmosphere at the Ginza Six Rooftop Garden. Some visitors were taking photographs, others were quietly talking with friends, while many simply sat on the benches enjoying the fresh air.
It felt less like a tourist attraction and more like a small public park suspended above the city. We made a 360 round and enjoyed each angle the observatory had to offer.
If you enjoy photography, the rooftop also offers fantastic opportunities to capture Tokyo from a different angle. You will see most of the luxury branded buildings from there, so not a bad spot to create some memories on a photo. For example towards the Sky Tree which is also visible.
Perfect During Every Season
The Ginza Six Rooftop Garden changes throughout the year. Fresh greenery in spring and summer, colorful leaves during autumn, and crisp city views in winter each create a slightly different experience.
No matter when you visit, the rooftop offers a peaceful contrast to the energetic streets below. The access is quite easy with the several elevators on two access points, so don’t worry if you have bad knees as someone I know. There is even a tiny shrine, which gives even more immaculate vibe.
Final Thoughts
The Ginza Six Rooftop Garden reminded me that some of Tokyo’s best places aren’t hidden down small side streets—they’re hidden above them.
Whether you’re visiting Ginza for shopping, sightseeing or simply exploring on foot, I’d highly recommend taking a few extra minutes to visit the rooftop. It’s free to enter, beautifully maintained and offers one of the most relaxing viewpoints in the district.
